MOUNT EAGLE WINDFARM IRELAND

Objetivo

To construct and operate a windfarm and feed the electricity in the utility grid. To demonstrate the set up of a windfarm as an enterprise as part of their business by an agricultural coop. To transfer advanced technology to less developed areas of the European Community. To promote investment in infrastructure of the county. The mean wind is 8.9 m/sec and the annual energy yield will be 16000 MWh.

The site is located on the Eagle Mountain, one of the highest points in County Kerry. This mountain rises 460 metres high above the surrounding area, approximately 30 km from the coastline.
The mountain mainly consists of limestone covered with approximately 2-2.5 m of peat. The lower parts of the mountain have been partly planted with trees as part of the rural diversification. The windy conditions on the higher grounds render this land unsuitable for any agricultural or forestry use.
The area is sparsely populated with only one house within a radius of 1000 m from the site.
The wind resource is currently being measured by ESB International, as part of a programme undertaken by Ireland's Electricity Supply Board (ESB). Measurements have been made since December 1991, and the preliminary results are extremely encouraging with an estimated annual mean windspeed of 8.9 m/s at 40 m height. The promoters have been given full co-operation,
encouragement and full access to all wind datacollected by the E.S.B. on the site. The VESTAS V-39, 500 kW wind turbines will be used in this wind farm.
