LOW ENERGY HOUSING IN UK, DK AND THE FORMER EAST DE : A COOP PROJECT FOR MINIMIZING ENERGY USAGE [PHASE 2]

Obiettivo

To demonstrate that a fully integrated and qualitative design package of energy efficient measures in the construction of housing can :
- Reduce heating, lighting and ventilation costs by around 43% over and above current (1993) national (European) minimum standards.
* Reduce energy use and CO2 emissions associated with space and water heating by 44%.
* Reduce the embodied energy and environmental impact of the building materials, the construction process and the maintenance of buildings by the careful design of buildings, selection of its components, construction process of systems.
* Show that energy efficiency measures over and above national minimum standards are cost effective for both private and social housing schemes and demonstrate positive internal rates of return on investment.

The project comprises the construction of 107 new low rise dwellings. In Britain 58 dwellings for social housing will be built on a site in Bristol following the demolition of a tower block. In Denmark 14 new units will be built in Aalborg again for social housing and in Germany 35 units will be built for private sale near Berlin.
The aims of the project will be achieved by :
* maximising natural day and sun lighting
* better thermal performance of the building fabric
* increasing the efficiency of the heating systems
* utilising solar energy
* constructing 'airtight' buildings to minimise filtration
* providing passive means of natural ventilation
* using low energy lighting
* selecting materials and processes with the least embodied energy
* recycling materials wherever possible
* selecting materials and processes with the least environmental impact
* constructing with durable low maintenance materials
* reducing water consumption
* avoiding 'high tech' solutions.
The project will demonstrate that comprehensive consideration of energy issues and environmental impact before, during and after construction can produce a variety of housing for rent or sale which is affordable and cost effective which also has minimal impact on natural resources and the earth's environment.
Monitoring of running cost following construction of the dwellings will prove whether the very low costs predicted (as low as 0.1 ECU/m2/week for heating) are achieved.
