Objectif The NMRC aims to install a coupled Energy Management System and Combined Heat and Power Scheme, of 95 kW electrical and 150 kW thermal capacity, at our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in County Dublin. It is aimed to prove that such a project is financially attractive and of acceptably low technical risk. It is further aime to use this project as a role model for the widespread dissemination of Combined Heat and Power technologies in hospital buildings in Ireland. To this aim, the NMRC will work in conjunction with its Consulting Engineers, MacArdle McSweeney Associates. The MRC, a charitable hospital organisation, also aims to significantly reduce its annual energy expenditure. It is proposed to install a Combined Heat and Power scheme coupled with an energy management system at the hospital. This type of project has not been carried out in any public, charitable or voluntary hospital in Ireland. A gas fuelled internal combustion engine will drive an alternator and contribute 95 kW to the hospital's electrical load. Waste heat from the engine will be recovered and will contribute 150 kW to the building's heating load. A computerised Energy Management System will automatically regulate both heating and electrical loads in the building. The technology will operate in the context of a 120 patient hospital which has sufficient electrical and thermal base loads to support successful implementation. The building represents a large number of similar buildings which could benefit from the implementation of this technology. The installation will be in addition to existing conventional equipment and the overcost is projected at IRL 110.000. The resulting net annual savings are projected at IRL 25,350. The simple payback period is projected at 4.4 years.Montoring will be fully automated by onborad and remote computer installations and will continue for at least 12 months after the commissioning of the project.
