Cel The objective of this project is primarily to carry out lidar measurements related to the polar stratosphere with particular reference to the optical characteristics of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC). In addition measurements of related atmospheric parameters will be carried out, with the aid of balloons and ground based instruments. The observational data will be used for validation of model studies of physical processes leading to formation, growth and sedimentation of PSCs. In connection with the data analysis of the lidar and balloon campaign, a column PSC model will be constructed by stacking a cloud box model. Measured vertical profiles of temperature and humidity will be used as input to the cloud model in predicting the cloud particle type, density and size distribution, which can be tested against the simultaneous measurements of the backscattering properties. Air parcel trajectory calculations will be used to give information on the temperature history of the observed particles and air masses which is of major importance in predicting the cloud properties. The measurements programme involves primarily the use of an optical radar (lidar). The data reduction is performed through a specially designed software which is able to separate the contribution of the atmospheric gases (Rayleigh scattering) from the contribution of the aerosols (Mie scattering). The lidar measurements will provide time series of the backscattering cross section of the clouds and their depolarization coefficients. Temperature profiles will be obtained with standard radiosondes. The use of improved, numerical radiosondes will be considered. In addition electrochemical cell (ECC) ozonesondes, and frost point hygrometers will be launched and ground based spectrophotometrical observations of ozone, nitrogen dioxide and other trace species will also be carried out.
