Cel The objective of the project is to complement existing approaches to monitoring of workers, potentially exposed to external ionising radiation. It aims at contributing to the necessary improvement of dosimetry of mixed radiation fields of penetrating radiation, in particular for neutrons, such as at nuclear power plants, around particle accelerators and in air or spacecraft. Therefore, in conformity with the Research Task D.2.5 "Monitoring of external irradiation", the present proposal approaches the problem of neutron dosimetry in mixed fields by active devices with increased sensitivity, improved energy dependence of their response and some field-analysing properties. Different options are combined in this proposal which have different physical bases and aim at slightly different goals. Devices based on microdosimetric principles will aim at measuring dose and dose equivalent with some spectrometric potential with respect to LET rather than discriminating radiation types. They include multi-element tissueequivalent proportional counters, random-access memory chips and a multi-wire drift chamber with tissue-equivalent gas. Devices particularly developed to measure neutron field characteristics or dose equivalent comprise the superheated-drop technology with "active" readout, instruments based on charged-particle detection by semiconductor sensors (depleted layers) where the charged particles are generated by neutron interaction with converter layers, and a novel design of a small device based on an ion chamber. Close interdisciplinary collaboration is necessary between experts in neutron dosimetry, sensor development and micro-electronics. Irradiations in reference fields (neutrons and, if necessary, also photons) will be provided, which are considered an indispensable means of quality assurance during the development of radiation measuring devices. At about mid-term a joint irradiation experiment will be organised where the prototypes developed by the various partners will be tested with mainly monoenergetic neutrons and their performance compared to eachother. This multivariate approach keeps the risk of failure small. At the end of the project it should be possible to decide which of the investigated methods have the best potential to be successfully further developed into routine instruments for a better assessment of exposure to workers or into research tools with great reliability, which offer important information on the radiation field to be analysed.
