Cel For the non-destructive examlnation of radioactive waste packages passive and active neutron assay techniques are supposed to be suitable for the determination of fissile material, especially in case of strongly gamma -absorbing matrix material or in the presence of fission and activation products, where gamma measurements need an extremely long time or fail completely. To interprete the results of passive neutron counting correctly the nuclide composition concerning plutonium and other transuranic elements and the chemical environment of alpha emitting nuclides must be known. Furthermore the absorption properties of the matrix have to be considered. In the existing devices the consideration of these effects in evaluation of the measured data has not been taken into account completely. Therefore development and testing of an appropriate interpretation model considering all information available (including other NDT methods) will be realised. To distinguish between sf- and (alpha,n)-neutron emitters the applicability of time correlation methods for typical waste matrices and geometries (e.g. conditioned waste in 200 1 drums) will be studied. Active neutron counting is a well established method in the field of safeguards. However, the determination of fissile material in typical waste containers by this technique is not sufficiently studied yet. Commercially available active neutron interrogation devices do not provide sufficient information from measurement to characterise the waste packages with respect to their neutron moderation and absorption characteristics. To overcome this problems the properties of existing neutron sources and advanced detector configurations have to be considered resulting in an appropriate interpretation model and a recommendation for an appropriate device.
