Influence of fuel formulation on atmospheric reactivity of exhaust gases

Objectif

To investigate the influence of reformulated fuels and their related exhaust gases from combustion engines on the atmospheric processes which control ozone and other photooxidant formation.

The results of the investigations will provide the kinetic and mechanistic data required for the development of
abatement strategies based on the use of reformulated fuels. Particular attention will be given to the impact of
the different fuels on the atmospheric NOy chemistry. This is of significance for O3 production in low NOx
regimes due to the long-range transport of long-lived photooxidant products from urban areas into the free
troposphere and remote areas.
The fuels to be investigated will be gasolines with different olefin, aromatic and oxygenated hydrocarbon
(ethers) content which are either already commercially available (EURO GRADE and Reformulated EURO
GRADE) or are being developed. Diesel fuels with varying contents of aromatic, sulphur and oxygenated
compounds will also be investigated. The studies on the exhaust gases will be performed in the EUPHORE
simulation chamber. Samples of the exhaust gases will be mixed with air of different compositions of reactive
trace substances and irradiated by natural sunlight. Based on the experimental results mechanisms describing
the chemical processes will be derived. These mechanisms will subsequently be reduced and prepared for use
in atmospheric models.
