Biogenic emissions in mediterranean area - Phase II:-1996-1997

Ziel

To complete the collection of emission and concentration data of selected gases from vegetation by supplementary in-field measuring campaigns, scaling-up these data to the entire Mediterranean area.

The Biogenic Emissions in the Mediterranean Area (BEMA) project is a European project with the primary aim
of quantifying the emission rates of selected reactive gases from vegetation to the atmosphere in the
Mediterranean Basin. The project is focussed on those trace gas species that take an active part in tropospheric
photochemistry especially reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and reactive oxygenated species. The
data are of value for the parameterisation of tropospheric chemistry models and in particular for the assessment
of the role of these compounds to ozone formation. The BEMA project has been divided into two phases. The
first one, partially accomplished within the frame of the Environment programme for the period 1994-1995
funded by the EC as BEMA - Phase I, has been focussed on a series of intensive field campaigns carried out
at different test sites representative of Mediterranean ecosystems in Italy, France and Spain. Emission fluxes
and ambient concentrations of primary compounds and their reaction products have been determined together
with the seasonal and annual variability of emission rates and concentrations.
The second phase of BEMA will focus on:
-modelling of vegetation emissions as a function of environmental and physiological parameters;
-using a GIS (Geographic Information System)-based micro- and meso-scale model to combine area/time
related data with the pertinent emission factors of the
Mediterranean Basin;
-evaluating the ozone forming potential of biogenic VOCs with respect to the anthropogenic ones
(backed by laboratory experiments) by means of photochemical models.
