Objective BE95-1363 Advance Flight Management System - AFMS While the European airframe manufacturers can already specify the requirements for Flight Management Systems (FMS), for the European avionics industry, the capability to develop a FMS is of strategic importance, since the FMS will become the focal point of the onboard systems in the future CNS/ATM environment and will therefore dominate cockpit avionics. Therefore, a project is proposed that will prepare the European avionics industry to gain a significant market share, in a market dominated by single American company. In the course of the intended project, a demonstrator for an Advanced Flight Management System (AFMS) will be developed and evaluated. In particular, the proposed work will focus on: - flight management functions that are compatible with the future European CNS/ATM environment, including flight plan negotiation and 4D planning/guidance - the role of the crew as the manager of the airborne part of the future ATM system - overall system integrity - user oriented functionality and cost-effectiveness. The work will set forth pre-competitive research efforts in the field of FMS in Europe and will therefore be based primarily on the experience gained by this consortium in the following projects: - the "Experimental FMS" ( EFMS) developed in the PHARE programme - the German crew assistant prototype "Cockpit Assistant System" (CASSY) - the currently running APAS study AFMS (DGXII) The 39 month project will start with a consolidation of the functional requirements from the aforementioned projects and the identification of the ATM environment in order to define and to specify the concept of the demonstrator modules. In a second step the different modules of the AFMS demonstrator will be developed on the basis of existing modules. The main modules will be: - uplink message processing and downlink message generation - onboard message processing - 4D flight planning and guidance - pilot interface (e.g. speech input, graphical user guidance) - navigational database management Following the module development and testing at the different partners sites, the AFMS modules will be integrated in a flight simulator. Messages from Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Airline Operation Control Centre (AOCC) will be simulated in order to validate the AFMS functions in real life scenarios. Test nuns with airline pilots will be performed and evaluated. The project will end with the elaboration of an exploitation plan in order to ensure the dissemination of the results and to bring European avionics industry in the position to start a subsequent product development. The proposing partnership is multinational, highly experienced and well-structured, including - end users (AENA, IB, BA) - avionics suppliers (DASA, GMAV) - aerospace research institutes (DLR, NLR, DRA, RWTH) - aircraft manufacturers (DA, ECD) - SMEs (RTSN, BTN). The involvement of partners from six different European nations ensures a common understanding of the future CNS/ATM environment and will facilitate the introduction of a joint European ATM system.
