Digital Mock-Up Ergonomic Simulation

Objective

Objectives and content

Current industrial practice in automotive, aerospace and other manufacturing industries involves the
creation of physical product models (physical mock-ups) as a help to designers, manufacturing planners, etc/ The objective of the(se) project(s) is to depart from this practice and develop the technology that allows designers manufacturing planners and even the management to work on Virtual Products /Digital Mock-Up's (DMU).

They can make decisions related to the concept, design and all downstream processes. This technology will allow companies to work in a concurrent engineering environment independent of their size and product configuration. To achieve this goal a cluster of projects including modelling, simulation, visualisation, etc. (see figure) is proposed.

Within this cluster of projects the objectives of the DMU-ES project is to develop the technology which allows the designer to perform Ergonomic simulation in DMU environment for Product Conception And Downstream Process i.e.:

- to describe the bio-mechanical model to perform all the specified applications.
- to specify and develop AIT European ergonomic databases. - to describe the interaction of humans with the product (driver / pilot ergonomics) and in the manufacturing and maintenance process, simulating industrial workers e.g. on the assembly line or shop-floor support environment.
- to integrate them in the DMU in order to simulate the human behaviour with the product
- to introduce regulation simulations and validations through the dummy - to specify and develop a link with virtual reality applications in order to get the "touch and feel" impression in subjective simulations - to define preferred processus taking advantages of DMU technologies.
The benefits of this technology will include substantial reduction of development time (at least 10%) and manufacturing cost, dramatical increase of product launch quality such as reduction of Physical Mock-up's. It is expected that the process simulation technology will benefit not only automotive and aerospace industry but other industrial manufacturing sectors such as house appliances, machine building industry ship building etc. The composition of this consortium includes end users, technology vendors and universities and guarantees this successful performance of the project.
