Paediatric European Network for the Treatment of AIDS

Cel

The epidemic of AIDS in Russia is characterized by late onset and slow progression. Although further development of the epidemic is difficult to predict, there are no special reasons to hope that the Russian population will escape. The current situation arround pediatric AIDS in Russia (small number of patients) does not allow us to anticipate immediate inclusion of Russian pediatricians in therapeutic trials carried out by the PENTA group, but their adherance to the European Community standards on early diagnosis and care of HIV infected children seems to be important even now. Current anf future needs and possibilities of Russian partners are compatible with the original objectives of the Concerted Action. The first steps of collaboration of Russian partners could be their participation in meetings with virologists, molecular biologists and immunologists With the aim to determine and disseminate new protocols for early diagnosis in children; participation to meetings with neurologists involved in the care of HIV-infected children; education of the potential trial centres about the requirements to be followed in order to execute a well designed clinical trial. Russian partners can already be involved in Network standardisation and scientific standardisation, even though they would no take part in the actual trials. Two Russian centres involved in pediatric immunology research applied for participation in the PENTA project: the Institute of Immunology in Moscow and the Research Institute for pediatric Hematology in Moscow; Both Institutes have pediatric immunology units with staff experienced in diagnosis and care of immune deficiencies other than AIDS, and laboratory possibilities for routine immunological investigation and AIDS detection. The objective of the additional proposal consists in the education of Russian pediatricians and immunologists about uniform European standards of care for HTV infected patients in order to create conditions for future therapeutic trials The additional proposal will allow Russian specialists to integrate the Community's search of optimal solutions to the care of HIV infected patients. A group of speciallsts will be created in Russia. The knowledge of this group can be further disseminated to other centres interested in care of HIV infected children.
