DEVELOPMENT FROM CYCLODEXTRIN DERIVATIVES TO POLYMERIC MATERIALS FOR SELECTIVE TRANSPORT, SEPARATION AND DETECTION OF ACTIVE SUBSTANCES

Objectif

Cyclodextrins are a unique group of cyclic glucose oligomers. They are
biotechnologically produced from potato or maize starch to a reasonable price of 6-20 ECU/kg at present.

The main objective of this proposal is to initiate a breakthrough for industrial
applications of cyclodextrins. Therefore the interesting inclusive properties of
cyclodextrins are to be used to retard, transport, separate and detect active substances. These functions will lead to a great variety of applications : improved drug delivery and slow release of active substances, refined pharmaceuticals, decontamination of waste waters and detection of poisons in the environment.

The main objective is going to be reached within the following subprojects :

- development of highly active cyclodextrin based resins for the decontamination
of waste waters. Pollutants like chlorinated biphenyls are going to be removed
by filtration techniques;
- search for new large scale separation processes for stereoisomers by two phase
separation systems, e.g. liquid/liquid or crystalline/liquid. These processes are
of special interest as they can be carried out in high quantities (tons) and both
batch and continuously;
- development of specific chromatographic systems for the analytical and
semipreparative separation of enantiomers. Special emphasis will be on
advanced chromatographic techniques like supercritical fluid chromatography
and capillary electrophoresis;
- development of highly specific sensor devices from cyclodextrins. State of art
waveguide technology will be used to construct devices for the fast and
continuous detection of small amounts of dangerous pollutants in the
environment;
- design of cyclodextrin derivatives for the programmed targeting of drugs in the
human body. Cyclodextrins have to be labelled with recognition sites for the
desired destination in the body. Targeting of drugs has raised great attention in
medicine as it minimizes undesirable side effects of drugs;
- development of procedures for well defined and stable coatings of surfaces with
cyclodextrin derivatives, especially cyclodextrin polymers. Surfaces of metals,
textiles, paper and polymers have to be considered. This surface modification
can be applied for thermotransfer printing, to improve dye adhesion, for
antistatics or for anti-bacterial protection.
