European consortium of earthquake shaking tables, phase 2

Objective

This proposal is for a 4-year extension of the ISMES part of the successful ECOEST programme funded by the Commission within HCMP (Large facilities) for the period 1.3.93- 29.2.96..
ECOEST contains four of Europe's principal earthquake engineering laboratories, at Athens, Bergamo, Bristol (co-ordinator3 and Lisbon. ECOEST2 proposes the addition of Julich (Germany) in this quartet. Recent earthquakes in California (1994) and Japan (1995) have confirmed the timeliness and value of the ECOEST research programme, particularly the need to mobilise total European competence in order to obtain satisfactory results in reasonable time.
ISMES contributes significantly to the five main research themes of ECOEST, which are:
1) To standardise shaking table facilities and operating procedures at international levels, allowing Europe-wide research activity. 2) To give specific support to research requirements of EUROCODE8 (Design of structures in seismic areas) for bridges design.
3) To accept European researchers to participate in ISMES's researches in civil and electromechanical fields.
4) To offer training in the use of shaking tables in seismic design and to promote good practice
5) To publish research results and data in aid of the European Construction Industry in its internationally competitive activities.
