Implementation of architectured real time systems using the vehicle area network

Ziel

REALNET is a 24 month project dealing with the CAN protocol which became a Pan-European standard and is likely to be applied throughout the world. The white book of the OMI defines multiplex technology as being of highest priority. This is because the technology sees emerging markets and is key to consolidate the world class position of the European auto manufacturers. More than 13 million vehicles are produced in Europe every year. An increasing value of electronics is driven into these cars due to the application of multiplex technology. For the car manufacturer multiplex has significant advantages as it reduces the wire harness cost and allows the implementation of consumer visible distinguishing features. The European Module Library ELI does not contain any automotive multiplexing cells yet. Throughout the REALNET project a communication cell implementing the CAN protocol will be added to the European module library ELI. The integration of the cell with a CMOS microcontroller will be demonstrated. An extensive test and validation plan will be made an integral part of the ELI representation of the cell, such that the correct implementation of the CAN protocol can be ensured in future applications. Beside the implementation and exploitation of the CAN cell, an engine management demonstrator will be built in order to develop, integrate and demonstrate all aspects of a modern networked system. It will be top-down architectured and will apply an OSEK conformant operating system.
The project consortium mirrors the vertical integration of the REALNET project:
Dassault Electronique is involved in professional software development and has an excellent background on the validation of the VAN protocol; Motorola is a leading supplier of integrated circuits for the European auto industry; Magneti Marelli is a European leader in the production of electronic control units; and the two car manufacturers -Renault and PSA - will do the total system architecture and technology integration. The exploitation of the results of REALNET will be straight forward. The deliverables such as the ELI-CAN cell, the software interfaces and even the engine management unit demonstrator are all designed to be applicable in series produced cars. The project contributes to the OMI objectives under task 5.1 (Contribution of new supercells in the standard OMI format) and task 5.9 (Vertical Integration).
