Objectif OMI/CORE is basically focusing on improving the development environment for embedded applications in order to decrease costs and time to market. The goal is implemented through a strategy which involves the complete development environment for embedded applications. The strategy is using five strings. The first strategic string is based on three subjects, two standards and one set of standards, which divide the development environment into functional independent parts:1 the Architecture Neutral Distribution Format, ANDF,2 a common object format, and3 Host/Target Protocols. The ANDF, providing functional independence in the sense that producers are programming language dependent, while installers are language independent. A producer and an installer are commonly known as 'a compiler'. A common object format provides functional independence in the sense that debuggers, memory analyzers and other tools relying on structural and storage information, is independent of producers and installers. Host/Target protocols are functionally independent in the sense that the host specific parts are independent of the target specific parts. This strategic string will provide an open embedded development environment. The second strategic string is to allow the full use of object-oriented languages in OMI environments based on ANDF and a common object format. This means that the structural information needed for handling object-oriented languages are passed from producers via ANDF to installers and from installers via the common object format to debuggers, linkers and memory analyzers. This strategic string will be very helpful in providing a more complete OMI Software Architecture. The third strategic string is to divide components such as cross debuggers, embedded profilers, and embedded coverage analyzers up into hardware dependent and independent parts based on host/target protocols. This will make it possible for vendors to share either host or target components and thereby reduce cost and time-to-market. The fourth strategic string is to support debugging of object-oriented languages, languages supporting multi-processing and provide on-chip debug support. The purpose of the common debugger architecture is also to provide the basis for multiple languages debuggers. The fifth strategic string is to develop a common architecture for producers and installers so that architectural based code reuse is possible, both between producers and installers from the same vendor and between complementary vendors. This will not only decrease costs and time-to-market, but also increase the competitive strength of small to medium sized vendors in Europe. It is also the purpose to enhance the common architecture for producers and installers to families' support of producers and installers. For example, generic installers for RISC and DSP processors. This will significantly decrease costs and time to market. Existing technology from the participating industrial organisations will be adopted and integrated. In particular ANDF based technology (Etnoteam and DDC International), tools (Etnoteam, DDC International, GEC Plessey) and advanced compiler technology (ACE). The project will also include activities related to the definition of strategic directions for successful establishment of standards (OMG), innovative models for time management in HRT systems (Milano Ricerche).
