High-performance computing for clinical applications of 3d ultrasound

Obiettivo

Three-dimensional ultrasound has the potential to become a new, fast, non-radiative, non-invasive and inexpensive tomographic medical imaging technique. The medical relevance of three-dimensional ultrasound has already been proven for a wide variety of routine clinical applications related to foetal examination, arterial plaque measurement, gastroenterology, abdominal tumours, cardiology, aneurysm, infant hip measurement and arthritis. On a conventional system the computing time required for a three-dimensional reconstruction is too long varying from several minutes to a few hours for each image. These times are not acceptable for routine clinical applications and hinder general clinical use of the method. The goal of the project is to develop a three-dimensional ultrasound system suitable for routine clinical applications. The necessary reduction in processing time will be achieved through the use of a high-performance computer system for the reconstruction of three-dimensional volumes. The involvement of clinical practitioners in the project ensures the market relevance of the results.
