Customer benefits of monitoring and targeting (M&T) using intelligent metering

Cel

There are four objectives to this project:
1 . to show that, by providing customers with a high quality level of data, this will increase their awareness of their energy consumption and costs, leading to behavioural changes resulting in energy savings.
2; to provide this information in a way which is acceptable to customers.
3. to investigate how the provision of high quality data and its real-time communication can allow more detailed monitoring and targetting in optimizing the use of generation and distribution assets, leading to environmental and energy efficiency benefits.
4. to develop methods and procedures which are of replication at large scale. The results should not be attribuable to the pilot nature of this project.

AIM:
To develop a pilot method of promoting large-scale rational use of energy by introducing intelligent, remote metering and rapid two-way communication to improve the customer's awareness of energy consumption and costs in the residential and industrial sectors. This will overcome the barrier caused by energy consumer's widespread lack of data.
INNOVATION:
Power-line-carrier technology offers new opportunities in monitoring and targetting energy savings by allowing energy suppliers to measure usage and communicate with customers. The innovation lies in using the rapid communication facilities to provide the customer with high quality data. With this information, the customer will be more aware of how much energy is being used and what this costs. This greater awareness will stimulate new investments in energy efficiency. The power-line-carrier technology is a proven method of communicating over the existing electricity distribution network; this proposal seeks to exploit the opportunities which this technology offers to communicate energy usage with costumers. Other means of intelligent, remote metering exist, but these are far less effective. Power-line-carrier technology offers the prospect of large-scale replication, by replacing existing electricity and gas meters, giving all customers the data for monitoring and targetting their energy consumption. There are over 100 million energy customers in Europe which should use this equipment, with the prospect of large-scale improvements in rational use of energy through M&T
PROJECT:
It is supposed to install intelligent, remote metering in 200 electricity customers' premises. This will provide rapid communication of data and will replace existing meters. This pilot trial will investigate how customers respond to having access to accurate data about their energy consumption and costs. It is expected that customers will be much more aware of how they use energy, resulting in changes in behaviour and reduced energy consumption. The data collected will be analyzed and interpreted for the customer. It is expected that this will prompt new investments in energy efficiency equipment and the development of 'energy efficiency tariffs'. The purpose of the project is to exploit the facilities offered by the customers' lack of energy usage datz. This technology is an important step forward because it makes usage data availabe to all customers at acceptable cost, unlike other metering methods.
