Strategies for Fuel Savings and Air Pollution Control for Central Heating

Ziel

The aim of the project is to analyse the fuel saving and air quality improvement possibilities in Athens emanating from the widespread use of boilers regulated through timers (without any automatic temperature feedback or compensation), of burners without automatic air dampers, and of hot water pipes in the boiler room without insulation.

The potential energy and environmental gains emanating from the widespread use of boilers regulated through timers, of burners without air dampers, and of uninsulated hot water pipes in the boiler room, are analysed by:
1. processing burner and boiler operating data, along with inner building and ambient temperature data, obtained from monitoring systems installed in fifty residential appartment buildings;
2. retrofitting the timer-control systems with temp. compensation ones in the boilers of ten buildings and processing the monitoring data collected;
3. applying a climatological dispesion model.
All monitoring data have been collected and are getting processed. Moreover, use of the climatological model demonstrates predominance of space heating on the Smoke and SO2 concentrations in Athens, as well as the potential of the temp. compensation systems to reduce impact by 25 % by shifting a portion of emissions into day-hours when improved dispersion conditions prevail.
