Objective
To better understand the relation between active faulting, crustal and mantle structures and the inferred siesimc hazard in the region of Athens (Greece).
The project will focus on two scales: a regional (the Aegean), a local (the Gulfs of Evia and Corinth).
1) At a regional scale we will study the hazard associated with the Aegean sea which experienced the strongest
earthquakes in the present century and provoked tsunamis. We will study the sallow and intermediate depth
seismicity and mechanisms, the type of tectonics, the velocity structure, anisotropy, attenuation and the seismic
wave propagation.
We will install for a period of 6 months a network of 30 broad-band seismological stations over the Aegean
sea in order to gather the necessary data.
2) At a local scale, we will study the tectonics of the Gulf of Evia in the same details as we did for the Gulf
of Corinth, compare and look for possibly interrelated mechanisms. We will study the consistency between long
term (tectonics) and short term (geodesy) deformation and the relation between the deep and shallow structures.
We will use satellite imagery for tectonics, install a satellite-GPS network of benchmarks to study the
deformation. We will maintain the 2 local seismological networks. We will perform magneto-telluric
measurements and install for 5 months 45 seismological stations along 2 profiles located from northern
Peloponnese to Evia and study the deep structure and possible rooted faults.
The main deliverables will be maps of active faults, seismological and geodetic data.
