Cel This pioneering project is to develop and test user-friendly distance teaching classrooms in five European countries. The "telepresence" classrooms will enable teachers and learners to interact effectively and economically across a variety of telecommunications networks. Each member of the university consortium involved in BIC will be responsible for one of the components in the overall network, such as a group learning centre. Project results will be passed on to trainers in a handbook on building the classrooms, published in both paper and electronic form.Current telecourses delivered in Europe are either too costly to produce or are pedagogically ineffective. This project aims to design, build and test a user-friendly set of automated distance teaching classrooms that will allow teachers and learners to interact over a variety of telecommunications networks in a cost-effective and pedagogically sound manner. The telepresence classrooms will function on networks such as PSTN, ISDN, ATM, LAN, and TV based networks such as terrestrial, satellite, and cable systems. The objective is to keep costs as low as possible while retaining full functionality.Taking account of the requirements of practitioners in the field, the members of consortium will each take responsibility for an element of the telepresence network, i.e. an automated interactive presentation station, a learning centre suitable for group learning, an individual learner workstation, a centre for communication by a group of teachers/tutors, and a centre that allows remote classrooms to participate in conventional classrooms. The project will be managed to ensure maximum interoperability between the various scenarios, using common generic technologies and protocols. The main project outcomes are a range of fully functioning, interoperable, telepresence classrooms in five European countries which can demonstrate the potential of using telematics for real-time, live, teacher/student interaction in a cost-effective way. A handbook, in paper and electronic form, will be published to disseminate the results to educators and training providers. The handbook will be a complete guide on how to build a telepresence classroom with chapters on needs analysis, telepresence pedagogy, technical specifications and costs, and a number of case studies.
