Objectif Initiated by the Spanish National Distance Education University (UNED), DEMOS will develop distance education in which cooperation among teachers and learners will be flexibly supported. The project will hinge on four main groups of multimedia applications covering very varied telematics environments. These flexible delivery methods will help students learn what, where and when they please and at their own pace. DEMOS will use a cost-effective common hardware platform to avoid hardware supply problems. Validation will involve over 120 users in Spain, Austria, Greece and Portugal.The DEMOS proposal is born as an initiative of the UNED (Spanish National Distance Education University). UNED has a plan to cover their needs of new distance learning applications to be used in the current and future telecommunication networks.The scope of our work is to design and develop a distributed educational environment for distance education scenarios where cooperation among teachers, learners, tutors and experts will be supported in a very flexible way. It is focused in the development of multimedia CSCW applications for education over heterogeneous telematics environments.In this project 4 main groups of applications are going to be developed:- Collaborative hypermedia editor and common interoperability of applications toolbox.- Distributed virtual classrooms.- The computer integrated classroom with intelligent support.- Asynchronous collaborative learning tools.The applications may be tailorable to the different kinds of users and the different infrastructures available to facilitate the demonstration and exploitation phases. Each application will also be able to be executed in point to point and multipoint modes.A common hardware platform that will consist on PC's workstations with MS-Windows, a set of boards for multimedia (video and audio) and networks (ISDN, ATM, LAN and PSTN) support, connected to Unix servers (not necessary expensive ones) will be used in the project. This platform offers a cost-effective solution to an heterogeneous type of end users, and also a realistic solution that avoids hardware supplier problems.In the Validation phase, more than 120 users will be involved, in several european sites located in Spain, Austria, Greece and Portugal.
