Objectif TEN plans a tele-education experiment using a so-called "virtual-distributed classroom". Drawing on former work in Spain, the project is based on a fully integrated network, with both national and EU-wide coverage. Its demonstration will be via a trunk network, to stimulate future national tele-education networks with transnational capability. It will be developed and evaluated from a technical and teaching standpoint and then tested and adapted in experimental pilot phases, in line with in-company, institutional and individual training needs and cost-effectiveness. A commercial product based on EU standards and technology is also envisaged.The TEN project intends to be an experience in Tele-Education using the concept of "virtual-distributed classroom", with both a national and a trans-European coverage. It is based on a fully integrated network (satellite plus ISDN, plus LAN Ethernet).The main objective of TEN project, based on ETSIT "Enseñanza a Través de Satélite de Ingeniería de Telecomunicación" (a previous successful experience in Spain using HISPASAT), is to create a demonstrator covering at least six European countries, through a trunk network, that will be the ferment of the future creation of tele-education national networks with fully transnational capability.The TEN project has been designed following the life-cycle model, starting with a user needs study, based on the university experience of ETSIT and expanding its objectives in two directions, firstly transnationally and secondly, widening its scope for possible applications and pedagogical scenarios (University Campus and SME's sites).At the end of the two year period, a complete tele-education desmostrator system will be built, installed and evaluated from technical and pedagogical points of view. It will be tested and adapted to requirements through testing and feedback in experimental pilots (verification phase) paying attention to:- User requirements (large companies, SME's, Universities, professionals and individuals).- Needs from different actors involved in the pedagogical process (students, providers, directors of training in companies and institutions).- Functionality, user friendliness and cost-effectiveness.A final demonstrator pilot (validation phase) is included to close verification pilots. In addition to the validation process, a quality procedure will be implemented in order to obtain a potential commercial product, with European technology and using European standards in all cases.The TEN project will involve at the end of the forecasted period at least 190 hours usage with around 700 users representing the point of view of large institutions and companies, universities and experts.
