Cel EHTO aims to boost efficient integration of telematics in European health systems by heightening general awareness of EU projects in this area. The initiative will help users and managers to clarify their requirements for health telematics, and support supply of the right products by industry, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Results of projects will be classified on a user-friendly information base, while a modern demonstration site with satellite sites will promote products developed by users and SMEs. The projects will be further publicised via meetings, publications and multimedia activity.EHTO is basically a service to the health telematics sector, offering a co-ordinated approach to dissemination and visibility of project results allowing a more efficient integration of telematics within the different health systems in Europe. It will contribute to the deployment of health telematics technologies, applications and standards. The objective is to become an information bridge between supply and demand. On the demand side, it will help user-groups to define their requirements and decision makers in their choice of telematics solutions. On the supply side, it will help industry and specifically SMEs to deliver more appropriate products. To both, EHTO will offer a well structured, up-to-date information, acting in synergy with the other support actions, especially those at the overall telematics programme level (e.g. CONCORDE, ETHOS, ASSENT). By adding value to the information they provide, tailoring their messages to the specific needs of health professionals and policy makers, it will contribute to the differentiation of generic telematic services into usable products by the health sector.EHTO will focus on three main activities.1 - Creation of an INFORMATION/KNOWLEDGE BASE which will collect, analyse and make available in a user-friendly form a wide range of up-to-date information on all developments relevant to health telematics, including projects results. The information held by this decentralised European structure will be scientifically analysed, and then classified into categories corresponding to the needs of the different sector actors.2 - Installation of an industry sponsored DEMONSTRATION SITE, equipped with up-to-date technology (hardware/software) as well as a telecommunications infrastructure, and adapted to the current requirements of the sector. This DEMO-SITE will be a "permanent business window" demonstrating prototypes and products developed both by users and SMEs, within the health telematics domain. The DEMO-SITE will be the "hub" of other "Satellite Demo-sites" helping in the demonstration and interchange of European experiences, and the promotion of products. This information will be fed into the programme level watch activity (ETHOS) and its newsletter.3 - Development and co-ordination of health sector specific DISSEMINATION activities, supported by a wide variety of methods and tools, ranging from publications and theme-specific workshops to multi-media services. The use of Internet and World Wide Web will be co-ordinated with individual project initiatives and with the other support actions at programme level (CONCORDE). At regional level, dissemination will consist of active participation to "cascade conferences" enabling policy-makers and a wide range of sector actors to make a "strategic analysis" of both needs and solutions.EHTO will be in a strong position to capture all the know-how and experience of the sector, and to give support to the DGXIII-C Telematics Applications Programme. It will carry this forward to the future, serving as a catalyst for new initiatives in the context of the Global Information Society.
