Cel CROMATICA is concerned with improving safety and efficiency of rail travel. The project objective is to increase passenger capacity and security by using telematics to monitor, detect and implement strategies to improve the management of passengers and railway stations. It will include faster detection of crowd blockages, smoother punctual journeys and improved safety levels. The focus is thus the development, harmonisation and evaluation of the telematic tools required, including computer vision monitoring of crowd movements and on-line detection of undesirable events like accidents.CROMATICA is firmly inspired in national and common European policies that aim at achieving substantial shifts in daily patterns of travel from private means to public transport systems. Such changes in the habits of travel require improvements in :- the capacity to move larger numbers of people by :- earlier detection of crowd incidents (overcrowding, blocked passage ways, non uniform densities, high rates of density build up) to prevent major incidents and delays,- collection and analysis of crowd densities and flows to support longer-term planning,- the quality of service :- reduction of time spent in public transport,- better level of security by monitoring and automatic incident detection (fall on the tracks, abnormal motion, stationarity, abnormal events).CROMATICA is therefore concerned with the development, harmonisation and evaluation of telematic tools to allow such improvements. The project will involve :- on-line detection of situation of interest in movements of crowds within stations using CCTV and computer vision,- on-line detection of individual incident by computer vision,- portable video link with spread spectrum transmissions. The developments will be tested in major European sites: RATP Paris metro, London's Liverpool St. station (underground/railways), ATM of Milan, London Heathrow Airport and Madrid suburban metro/railway station.
