INTEGRATED SYSTEM TO PROMOTE ADVANCED TOURISM SERVICES IN EUROPE

Objetivo

Telematics in European tourism will be piloted by GENIUS ZEUS for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) providing high-quality user-friendly, up-to-date information, reservation and similar facilities. The project will implement a multimedia distributed management system and electronic data exchange enabling travel agencies, hotels and tourist offices to deliver such services. The value-added network developed for this purpose will complement the functions of large computer reservation systems. Operations will be tested for subsequent commercial exploitation whose success will depend on fast take-up by suppliers and users alike.

The global objective of the proposal is to utilise the appropriate telematics applications and solutions to the Tourist Industry in Europe with special attention to Small and Medium sized Enterprises in providing high-quality, up-to-date tourist information and facilitating booking, reservation and other services related to the tourist sector.

There are 6 demonstrator sites where the validation process will take place. The Irish demonstrator consists of two parts: A Central Reservations Office for Irish Country Holidays and Ernact European Economic Interest Group, a Regional Tourist Board in Donegal. The Icelandic demonstrator will be based in Reykjavik, where the Central Reservations Office for EUROGITES (European Federation for Farm and Village Tourism) is housed. Agriservice, representing and operating farm houses tourism in Italy, will operate the fourth demonstrator. Mondial and Mayfair travel, two Small and Medium sized Enterprise Travel Agencies in Austria and Greece respectively, will operate the final two.

The project will implement a multimedia Distributed Management System for computerised booking and purchasing of tourist related services through intelligent terminals. The electronic exchange of structured data between organisations will be based through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). These services will be offered to travel agencies, hotels and tourist offices, by the design and development of a Value Added Network (VAN) and its relative applications. It will act in a complementary way to large Computer Reservation Systems.

The aim of the project at its completion is to have designed, developed and extensively tested an operational system. A key factor in the products subsequent commercial development will be the rapid generation of the 'critical mass' of suppliers and users who will be able to support and use these services.
