Objetivo Objectives and content The European machine tool builders are striving towards specialisation and standardisation in order to obtain higher production volumes and better quality products. On the other hand, the machine tool users require increased flexibility and productivity, more customisation and assurance of high quality, asking from the machine tool builders even higher diversification of knowledge. A solution for this dilemma is the development of multi-functional, modularly structured and reconfigurable machines. This project is part of the 'Framerwork of Projects Concerning Intelligent Modules for Machine Tools'. which has the ultimate goal to enhance the state-of-the-art in European machine tool building for the manufacturing of re-configurable modular machine tools built with intelligent modules. The role of the actual project within the framework is to realise a first application. building a prototype based on an existing machine tool. The experience and knowledge gained in this project will be also extremely useful for all the other framework projects that focus on specific aspects of the application of the concepts. The final result of the project will be a prototype of a milling machine tool of medium size composed of four main modules: a motion unit, a cutting rotation unit, a tool exchange unit and a pallet exchange unit. The motion unit will be composed of the original motion kernel and frame of the machine tool and will also include the modular central control. With respect to the cutting rotation or spindle unit, the research activities will focus on the mechanical modularity and interchangeability of this unit. New interfaces between the modules will be designed. New control software will he implemented for the tool and pallet exchange units as for the modular central control. The project envisages the integration of sensors and local processing of sensor information in the modules as well as autoconfiguration of the modules within the machining workstation. The partnership structure guarantees complementarily of all industrial and research partners participating in the project. There is a balance between machine tool builders, component suppliers, end-users and research organisations. The partners are: Jobs (IT) (co-ordinator), Grundig Numeric (NL), Sidepalsa (ES), Anayak (ES), Fatronik (ES), Steinel (DE), Techspace Aero (BE), ISW (DE), KTH (SE), Tekniker (ES), WTCM (BE), WZL(DE).
