All weather arrival & departure

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
The cost of flight cancellations, diversions and delays caused by adverse weather severely impacts airline revenue. No less significant are the effects of weather conditions on flight safety, and on productivity, with delays causing the loss of millions of hours passenger time. ILS, which is obsolescent, and its potential replacement MLS are very costly both to maintain and to install on as yet unequipped airfields. The aim of AWARD program will be to demonstrate a system which will enable the continuation of transport aircraft operations safely in poor weather at a wide range of airfields without incurring the capital and revenue burden of installing and maintaining costly, complex and safety critical based equipment. This system should offer 8 solution to European airlines which operate on under equipped runways, especially outside Europe, and will increase their competitiveness.
AWARD proposes a solution based on the use of emerging technologies (flir?? and radar sensors, database, precise positioning systems, image processing). This solution called EVS or SVS (depending on the nature of the output), will provide the crew with a visual perception of the external world (video image), coupled with guidance indication (symbology), allowing the extension of flight operations down to very low minima, and with an increased level of safety.
Two solutions will be defined in AWARD. EVS (Enhanced Vision System) based on the fusion of sensors and database (based on true imagery), and SVS (Synthetic Vision System) based on the combination of precise positioning of aircraft and database (providing sythetic imagery).
After having defined the operational objectives and requirements, both EVS and SVS will be studied and evaluated in the field of performance, reliability, integrity, human acceptability.
A system/certification study will address questions of integrity and hardware performance at a level which, through lack of industrialised product, is not possible in a pre-competitive demonstration.
Furthermore Human factors studies will lead to definition and implementation into demonstrators of EVS and SVS formats (including development of sensors, database, image processing algorithms prototypes).
The EVS demonstrator because of a need of true sensor imagery will be integrated and tested into a flight test aircraft, and SVS will make use of a moving-base full-flight simulator.
Both concepts will then be evaluated in a human factor oriented approach, allowing to complete the evaluation of human performance, and human acceptability.
