An advanced data management system for G protein-coupled receptors

Objectif

G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the targetin the human body for most of today's medicines. Almost all European pharmaceutical companies market GPCR agonists or antagonists as drugs aimed at diverse disease states such as hypertension, sleeplessness, anxiety anddepression. The introduction of rational drug design has greatly enhanced the importance of fast and flexible access to data of different origins. Many different databases are queried routinely by academic and industrial scientists in the GPCR field. It would be a significant step forward in the rational drug design process if all existing GPCR related data were to reside in one well annotated, integrated database that could be queried in an intelligent manner.
The goals of the proposed grant are:
- Gathering data related to all aspects of G protein coupled receptors;
- Verification of data quality and consistency;
- Annotation of individual data items;
- Storage of all heterogeneous data in an object oriented database;
- Design of intelligent query systems and data-based inference engines;
- Automation of the first four items.
The participants will pursue these goals and combine the results in a database system that can be queried openly via computer networks.
The innovation potential of this project is greatest for the rational design of drugs. Pharmaceutical industries will use this database during the design cycle (lead finding - lead optimisation drug optimisation) of new and better medicines. Four European companies have made a commitment to function as beta-testers during the development of the system.
