Social conflicts on ecological issues

Objectif



This joint research project is about different patterns of social conflicts deriving from ecological issues. Specific problems of the environment in particular areas, local sites or regions, and their impact in terms of social relevance will be investigated.

The specific ecological issues are: heavy industries (metallurgy, chemical plants, mining industry); high-risk technologies, with emphasis on power plants (hydro, thermal and nuclear); environmental quality estimation; and facilitating information about the state of industrial plants, certain areas, and social groups.

The areas, sites and regions involved/afflicted are heavily radiated Belarus regions; Dnepr region (Zaporozhye) and Crimea; the Moscow metropolitan area; Sosnovyi Bor; Nizhny Novgorod and Rostov on Don.

The social impacts under consideration will be: social strain, conflicts, and innovative capabilities of large scientific centres; conversion of the defence complex; reconstruction of attitudes towards environmental policies; conflicts between popular movements such as Greenpeace and Zeleny Svit and state authorities, local administrations and industry.
