World population growth: mathematical modelling, demography and global security

Objective

This research will unite the methods of the exact sciences with the humanities in seeking a novel approach to some of the most important issues in our present predicament in world affairs and at a decisive time in history. The completion of this research will offer the opportunity for studies on issues of global security and stability, and of the interactions with and influence of the environment. Solutions to problems of the demographic transition and its significance will be developed.

The research will be based on modern methods of non-linear mechanics and mathematical modelling in developing phenomenological theory.

The research will concern the following activities: an interdisciplinary international research programme studying problems relating to world population growth, a sustainable future and global security using recent developments of non-linear mechanics and systems analysis; provision of the necessary infrastructure for a co-operative research project; and development of this line of research by providing the results for an interdisciplinary discussion of these problems.

The main result of the study at its initial stage will be a quantitative mathematical model describing the gross features of global population growth based on the principle of self-similarity and scaling.
