Objectif The purpose of this research project is to adapt modern methods of excavation and study, including palaeoenvironmental investigation, to selected material cultural resources of the European part of the NIS. The main objective of the research project will therefore be to continue excavations at important sites from crucial historical periods across a wide, yet coherent, cultural spectrum. Novel techniques will be applied when carrying out the archaeological work. In addition an important link with theoretical archaeology will be forged. At Panskoe, a far-out large Greek settlement in the sea of Scythian culture, continuation of previous excavations and investigations with novel techniques at this very well preserved short-lived key site will be carried out. At Catyr-Dag isolated farmsteads with adjacent cemeteries of non-local type, with Scandinavian and Baltic parallels, illuminating a late Roman defensive settling of units of foreign troops at road junctions and near fortresses, will be investigated. The Cernjachov settlements, in the main of the Germanic and Nordic Goths, along with very early Slav groups, reveal the transfer of north European house-typos and other material culture into the lands of the steppes and the Mediterranean culture during the European Migration period. Work hereupon will be continued. The work on the eastern Roman Limes, in contrast with the much studied Rhine-Danube frontier, will also break new ground. Finally, the Alaborg settlement will be further excavated. This settlement, previously on a modern military base and almost destroyed by it, is a key site in understanding the Rus Vikings, settling among the Finns and the expanding Slavs, in particular through comparison with the trading settlements.
