Church Slavonic literary tradition in manuscripts from the XIV-XVth to the XIXth century

Obiettivo

The aim of this research project will be to improve our knowledge of Church Slavonic literature and to facilitate access to the sources kept in Russian, especially in Moscovite, repositories for scholars both from Russia and abroad.

Most of Church Slavonic literature of non-liturgical character is handed down in codices dating from the XIV-XVth to the XIXth century. Since many thousands of these codices have never been fully described, our image of this literature is still very incomplete. While many ancient texts reaching back to the IX-Xth centuries remain unpublished, for most of the published ones we do have satisfactory editions at our disposal. A list of Church Slavonic works preserved in codices not yet described would be useful to improve our knowledge of this literature and would enhance new editions of various texts.

A concise description of manuscripts kept in their respective libraries and not yet described in printed catalogues will be prepared. Particular attention will be paid to some individual collections, or even to some special literary genre as Biblical and apocryphal, hagiographical and homiletical, historical etc. texts. These descriptions will help to ascertain the importance of these new materials in relation to existing catalogues, to analyse similarities and differences between the more ancient manuscripts from the XI-XIVth centuries and the later ones, and to underline similarities and differences between the Slavonic and the Byzantine tradition.
