Improved measurements of the neutron beta-decay lifetime

Objective

This project aims at an improved experimental determination of the free neutron lifetime which is of fundamental importance for particle physics and cosmology.

The most precise values for neutron lifetime were obtained recently by storage of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in material bottles and the project participants were involved in these experiments. This relatively new method has the potential for significant improvement.

The UCN interaction with material walls will be studied in more detail, since it is the main source of systematic uncertainties of the method and since it is of general interest for surface physics. A new generation of UCN storage will be performed in view of a one-second precision on the 15 minutes lifetime of the neutron. The experiments will be carried out at the UCN sources at St. Petersburg and Grenoble.
