Fundamental problems in classical, quantum and string gravity

Ziel

The main goal of this project is to promote and consolidate scientific collaboration between west European and NIS scientists in a particular field where the expertise of the project participants is complementary: the theory of classical and quantum gravitational phenomena.

Specific topics to be addressed are: gravitational collapse and black hole formation in the context of classical general relativity, of quantum gravity and of string theory; gravitational scattering at Planckian energies and small impact parameters as a gedanken experiment aimed at understanding the above point; the effective theory of gravity given by string theory in the large distance limit and its implications, particularly for black hole physics and for cosmology; the emergence and amplification of inhomogeneities in cosmological settings and their use for checking different cosmological models against data; and quantum gravity in lower dimensions and its relation to the perturbative and non-perturbative formulation of string theories; problems related to the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions within superstring theory.

The project will build a pan-European network that will be useful, not only for developing the understanding of the above fundamental problems but also for keeping alive the very valuable intellectual capital accumulated in this field of fundamental research in the NIS. The establishment of such a network will assist in providing better working conditions for the scientists of the participating NIS institutions and thus prevent the danger of an irreversible disintegration of their outstanding school.
