Obiettivo The study of physical processes occurring near the free surfaces or near the interfaces between media is of great interest from the point of view of both fundamental investigations and technological applications (especially in signal processing). In particular, the progress of many branches of modern technology is connected with further miniaturization of micro-electronic solid devices, means of communication, and acoustic and spin-wave devices in electronics (dealy lines, bandpass filters, etc.). As a consequence the problem arises of studying the dynamics of systems whose dominant characteristics reside in the physical properties of their surface. Such systems have been, and are, intensively investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The participants in this project have recently obtained some important theoretical results concerning the dynamics of planar defects and surface and interface waves, including the capillarity effects and the corresponding non-linear surface excitations. All these problems were investigated in the framework of both phenomenological and microscopic approaches. The project includes the following items which give a better understanding of non-linear surface wave propagation on elastic structures for engineering applications: investigation of new types of localized waves (e.g. solitons) in the case when the interparticle interaction in the surface layer differs radically from the interparticle interaction in the bulk (such a situation takes place when the particles in the surface layer possess charge, dipoles or magnetic moments and the long-range interaction between surface particles must be taken into account); investigation of non-linear elastic and magnetic surface waves propagated in plates and near the interface of different non-linear media (taking account of couplings between displacements of various polarizations); investigation of pseudo-localized waves near planar defects and surfaces; effect of lattice discreteness on the properties of the above-described waves.
