Provision of selected participants in the NIS with essential physics journals

Obiettivo

Working conditions in the leading research centres of the NIS have become extremely difficult. Many famous scientists have left the country, sometimes permanently, and young scientists are no longer encouraged to take up a research career in the present conditions. The European Physical Society (EPS) is concerned by this situation especially in the field of physics, the more so because of the great tradition that this unique and original school has in the NIS. The degradation of this school would be a great loss not only for the NIS but also to the world community of physicists. To prevent this degradation will contribute to the conservation of the world's scientific heritage.

Discussions with prominent physicists from the NIS have identified the support most urgently required: that physics journals continue to be sent to the NIS. For the moment, few European physics journals are available in the libraries of the NIS physics' organisations. EPS, as well as the scientific editors of the European physics journals, want NIS physicists to submit their papers to journals in Europe. Scientists from the NIS still want to do so, but it is then of course necessary to be able to find the journals in their libraries. Consequently, this action will have the effect to increase the collaboration of NIS physicists with those in the rest of Europe.
