Applied Mathematics

Cel

Mathematical theories and methods, the application of which until a few decades ago needed the conceptual solution of complicated equations, are now of widely used with the help of computer solutions and computer simulation. Mathematical methods can be applied to a variety of problems arising in different practical fields since the same mathematical control problem can have different physical meanings. This project is centered on applied mathematical methodologies and aims to contribute to the solving of practical problems arising in different fields of human activities. Applied mathematics is therefore the unifying subject of the project and in a broad sense includes computer modeling, automatic data elaboration, identification and control of systems.

The main objectives of the project are: to stimulate advancement of research in Russia in fields in which the great potential and theoretical background of Russian scientific communities are not yet matched by practical applications of mathematics to specific informatics, engineering and medical fields; to confront the brain-drain problem by providing financial and technical support to appropriately selected Russian research groups in well-defined activities; to facilitate scientific and information exchanges between these research groups and research groups in Western Europe which have already obtained concrete applications using common applied mathematics methods; and to enable the Russian research groups to compare their mathematical and technical methodologies and working methods, including organizational and managerial ones, with those of Western European groups dealing with similar issues.
