High performance computing in numerical simulations

Ziel

The objective of the project is to find efficient numerical solution methods for partial differential equations (PDEs). The solution of scientific problems by mathematical modeling occurs nowadays to an increasing extent in computing laboratories. The use of mathematical models solved numerically on modern computers enables scientists to make more efficient constructions and to find them in a cheaper and faster way than with previously used techniques. In some instances, such as in the modeling of groundwater and air pollution, there is practically no alternative to computer and mathematical modeling methods.

The solution of such scientific problems leads frequently to very large-scale computations involving up to millions of unknown parameters which must be computed. The solution of these problems requires the knowledge of most efficient algorithms as well as the use of modern computers. It is only by the combination of new hardware and software, using algorithms especially designed for modern computers, that the most demanding problems can actually be solved. The efficient use and solution of mathematical models on high speed computers necessitates a thorough and broad knowledge of scientific computing.

The main activities to be undertaken are: analysis of discretization schemes for various mathematical models including transport and reaction of pollutants, separation and turbulence of flows, absorbing boundary condition problems; construction and analysis of algorithms and adaptive mesh refinements for the solution of non-linear and linear systems of algebraic equations, including severely non-symmetric and indefinite and complex valued problems; and implementation of experimental software for a benchmark of test problems.

The above includes the accurate resolution of the problems using massive parallelizable solution methods efficient on shared and distributed memory computers.

The organizations will have access to supercomputing facilities through networks. Computer workstations are available. Support for the organizations in the NIS to buy equipment and to subscribe to journals is part of the project. At workshops to be organized in the framework of the project the research done will be followed up and a discussion for future activities will be started. Some scientists from NIS organizations will also visit participating organizations in Western Europe.
