Theoretical and experimental development of novel chemical and physico-chemical technologies based an ultrasonic action in heterogeneous systems

Ziel

This research project includes investigations into the chemical and physical influences of power ultrasound in processing technologies. Since each of the participants has expertise in complementary areas this co-operation should lead to substantial scientific advances.

The participants from the Kurnakov Institute will investigate the peculiarities of ultrasonic cavitation and ultrasonic streaming. They will also examine solid phase reactions in steel production including the isothermal transformation of undercooled austenite in medium carbon steel. This is coupled with work at the University of Stuttgart, where the structure and properties of as-cast composites on Al-Pb bases will be investigated, and in industry.

Partners at the Kurnakov Institute will also undertake the design of ultrasonic reactors for processes such as emulsification and extraction. This will aid the work at Coventry where the chemical processes involved during emulsification, extraction and adsorption processes are investigated. This work also links up with research at Bruxelles where the effects of ultrasound on filtration, floatation and destruction are being examined. The participants from the Academy of Fine Chemical Technology in Moscow will study the formation of stable and highly dispersed emulsions of oil-water and water-oil types in batch and continuous processes and chemical reactions in the liquid and liquid/solid state under the influence of ultrasound. These studies parallel the liquid/solid transformation work of the Kazakh participant.

On the basis of the research programme the participants will develop criteria which will aid in the prediction of the effects of an ultrasonic field on liquid and solid state chemical reactions.
