Natural history of hepatitis C virus: heterogeneity of strains circulating in Russia, Belarus, and Moldova

Objectif

At least six types (genotypes) of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) exist and circulate in different parts of the world. Different genotypes of HCV appear to possess different pathogenic properties and different sensitivity to interferon treatment. Nothing is known about genotypes of HCV circulating in Russia, Belarus, and Moldova, countries highly endemic for HCV infection.

The objectives of this project are: identification of HCV strains circulating in blood donors and patients with different forms of hepatitis C; HCV genotyping, cloning and partial sequencing of representatives of all identified types and subtypes; search for recombinant viruses and new genotypes; analysis of HCV genome heterogeneity and the peculiarities of its evolution; search for a possible correlation or association between HCV genotypes and their biological properties, including replication in tissue culture.

The results of these studies will improve the understanding of the natural history of HCV and the possible impact of the evolution of the virus on the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of HCV infection in general, and in three NIS countries in particular.
