Obiettivo The seismological service of the former Soviet Union and its constituent republics tended to work as a self-contained entity. Incorporating its results into world seismological databases met some difficulties caused by differences in methods and basic scientific techniques. Similarly, the Soviet scientists were not always in a position to take advantage of developments in techniques and data processing that had been evolving elsewhere. This project will enable a seismologist of the seismological service in Russia to be trained in the ISC for an initial period of one year to become intimately involved in the work carried out and the methods employed, and to ensure better integration of past and present seismological data from the former Soviet Union into global seismological analysis. The seismologist will become familiar with the procedures for data receipt and handling and the analysis methods used at ISC on a global scale. He will pay particular attention to the location of events made by local networks with determinations that include more distant readings. Such comparisons may help to determine local variations in crustal structure and velocities and suggest variations in analysis procedures to improve locations. Similarly, comparisons of magnitude of earthquakes as determined in the NIS and from stations in other territories should result in a better correlation between these types of magnitude. The result of the project will be methods of improving current analysis of earthquakes in the NIS from the point of view of position and size, leading to the possibility of re-evaluating past seismicity to improve the reliability of long-term catalogues of earthquakes and consequent assessment of seismic hazard.
