Comparisons of three approaches to the ocean-acoustic tomography: field experiment and numerical simulations

This research project aims to create an acoustic database that will make possible the comparison of results retrieved through three approaches to ocean acoustic tomography as well as study possibilities of their integration.

To this purpose, the dynamic tomography experiment and matched field tomography experiment will be held in the western Mediterranean during a 90-day research cruise aboard the research vessel (R/V) Akademik Sergey Vavilov. Acoustic signals emitted by the traditional tomography network deployed in the same basin as part of the international project THETIS-2 will be used. During the dynamic tomography experiment, acoustic signals of the THETIS-2 network are to be recorded along a number of propagation paths by means of a single shipborne receiver. Its position with respect to the R/V will be measured by a special acoustic positioning system while the location of the R/V will be determined using the global positioning system. The matched field tomography experiment will be performed on the basis of a moored wide-band multi-element acoustic array. All acoustic measurements are supplemented by an oceanographic verification programme based on CTD measurements. The possibility of processing and interpreting tomographic acoustic signals recorded via different approaches will be demonstrated.

This project represents a first step towards making a well based judgement on the applicability and value of the three approaches to ocean acoustic tomography in the Mediterranean environment. This stage of investigation, primarily an experimental one, is expected to be followed by a separate project devoted to the thorough inversion of refined acoustic data when exact information on the THETIS-2 tomographic system performance is available and to the extensive numerical simulations for estimating the accuracy of inversion results.

This project will result in the creation of an independent oceanographic verification database for the western Mediterranean using both historical data and CTD casts coupled with acoustic experiments. A computer algorithm based on satellite navigation (global positioning system) information and iterative processing of acoustic data will be developed, in order to estimate the Doppler frequency shift (due to the R/V drift) with the required precision of 0.5-1cm/s. The use of measurements of the arrival patterns from THETIS-2 sources will constitute an experimental basis for comparison of the three approaches to ocean acoustic tomography. The results of the project will be published in international scientific journals, three pilot articles in Russian, two reports to be presented at international conferences on acoustics and two articles to be prepared in co-operation with other participants of the THETIS-2 project.
