Reconstruction of summer temperatures in the Eurasian boreal zone and local anthropogenic changes in Russia by means of dendrochronology

Ziel

With the help of dendroclimatological methods (X-ray densitometry), the growth conditions of the forests and the summer temperatures can be reconstructed, year to year, for the past 400 to 1,000 years along Russia's entire boreal zone from Finland to the Bering Strait.

With the establishment of a densitometric laboratory in Russia, this research provides a baseline for evaluating the question of whether anthropogenic depositions and global climatic impacts have already influenced the growth of the trees in the north Eurasian boreal conifer belt.

The current project forms part of a large programme to build an extensive network in Russia suitable for analysis of the climate, thus providing the opportunity to study northern hemispheric densitometric dendrochronology. It will contribute in the following ways: establishment of a densitometric laboratory and necessary equipment at the Institute of Forest in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. This will include a binocular microscope with a core adjustment device, a high pressure twin-blade saw, an X-ray source and a densitometer. The densitometric tree ring laboratory in Krasnoyarsk will be the first one in Eurasia; training of technical and scientific personnel from the Institute of Forest and the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology in Russia, in all technical and statistical details, at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research, Birmensdorf, Switzerland and at the Climatic Research Unit in Norwich, England; development, scientific evaluation and publication of six tree ring density chronologies from central Siberia during the training period. The data will show how density and width of tree rings respond to environmental factors in this region, with special reference to anthropogenic changes in the atmosphere.

In the course of this project, the first Eurasian densitometric laboratory will be established in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, technical and scientific personnel will receive training, and scientific evaluation of data in relation to the anthropogenic changes in the atmosphere will be carried out in order to support dendroclimatological studies in the northern Eurasian boreal zone after 1995.

In addition, the climatological suitability of the densitometric values from conifers in the boreal zone will be demonstrated and the results published in an international journal.
