Prediction of theoretical buckling loads for stiffened and unstiffened shells: development of a unified design methodology

Over the past years a number of competing methods for the theoretical prediction of shell buckling loads have been developed. Each method offers certain advantages but none is yet considered sufficiently well-proven to constitute a universally acceptable design methodology for estimating safe but reliable shell buckling loads. Existing and proposed design procedures are consequently still reliant on lower bounds to the scatter of historically accumulated experimental data. However, this reliance on accumulated experimental data is placing real constraints on the more reliable and efficient use of new materials (especially high-strength, low-stiffness composites) and on fabrication techniques over expanded fields of application. It is inconceivable that statistically meaningful test studies alone will be able to cover the expanded parametric ranges opened up by these current developments.

This project has as its fundamental aim the development of an integrated theoretical approach. It will bring together and encourage correlative theoretical studies from each of the historically competing methods and, over a wide range of shell types, materials and loading conditions, aim to show that their predictions are consistent and mutually explicable; that they are consistent with accumulated past test results; and how the combined power of these methods provides the real prospect of an improved and unified future design methodology.

The objectives are to bring together internationally recognised groups from within the NIS and EU, to provide detailed cross-comparisons of a number of currently available non-linear numerical codes and in the process improve confidence in the non-linear computer codes being further developed within the NIS and to allow the non-linear numerical approaches to be related to classical post-buckling theory.
