Establishment of networks between Russia and west Europe in six branches of materials science (catalytic materials; materials for nuclear power engineering; nanophase materials; ceramics; optoelectronics and special light alloys)

Objective

Catalytic combustion is one of the most promising and challenging developments for future applications in industry and household appliances. Catalytic combustion is flameless and environmentally pure. No hydrocarbon or CO emissions take place and NOx emissions are practically eliminated at source. It has high fuel efficiency and high safety characteristics.

Low-temperature materials will mostly consist of a combination of base metal oxides and noble metals. La-and Ca- based perovskites, LaBO3, LaCoO3 etc, and barium hexa-aluminata, BaO6Al2O3 will comprise high-temperature combustion materials.

The first stage of the project will consist of physico-chemical studies on the phase and chemical composition of the starting support materials: fibrous ceramic mats, ceramic honeycomb monolith and foam-type porous ceramics. It will be necessary to select support materials complying with the requirements of fuel permeability, mechanical strength and thermal stability against temperature shocks.

The following activities will be undertaken: synthesis of new reports; catalyst development; stability of material of active component; interaction of active component with support material; and sintering and durability of catalytic material.

The project will establish a scientific multidisciplinary society including the best individual researchers and engineers from the Russian Academy of Sciences and other institutions in Russia; create networks of nodes of high scientific and technical capabilities directly connected to west European partners; open up opportunities for further scientific and technological collaboration in the selected areas; strengthen human relationships between eastern and western partners; and open up research management to young scientists and engineers from Russia.
