Metal-ceramic multimaterials; wettability, interfacial chemistry and bonding

Objetivo



Ceramic-metal interfaces profoundly affect the processing and performance of multimaterial systems such as coating compacts, composites and bonded components. This kind of material is vitally important for national and transnational European projects in the aircraft machine-tool, microelectronics and heat exchanger industries.

The aim of this project is to study the physico-chemical properties of metal/ceramic interfaces, especially their wetting behaviour and bonding. Experiments will be performed using various Cu, Al, Ni, Ti and Sn-based alloys, in contact with both oxide (alumina) and non-oxide (mainly silicon carbide) ceramics.

The principal specialised techniques involved in the work are: wettability experiments, both wetting kinetics and equilibrium contact angles; surface tension measurements under equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions; chemical and morphological characterisation of interfaces; and mechanical testing of metal-ceramic joints bonded by brazing or diffusion. From the results it is expected that a predictive model will enable wetting and bonding to be controlled through interfacial properties.

This joint research project should create the basis of a strong European school of capillarity and wettability studies for high-temperature materials.
