Fluid physics under microgravity

Objective

The main aim of this project is to continue the collaboration in the field of the behaviour of fluids under microgravity between different groups in Europe this should provide the NIS groups with appropriate computing facilities and the laboratory equipment needed to develop experimental facilities. Two other objectives of less economic impact but of paramount importance looking to the future and the improvement of working conditions of other scientific groups in NIS institutes not directly involved in the main objective, including young scientists and students, and the increasement of mutual knowledge and communication between the scientific communities of the NIS and western Europe.

In recent decades the behaviour of fluids under microgravity conditions has received attention from a large number of scientists worldwide. This problem, which has many specific aspects, is important not only because of the difficulties arising in the handling of fluids in space, but because there are many industrial processes on Earth in which capillary forces become dominant when compared with gravity forces.

The project will: analyse the stability of non-axisymmetric liquid bridges; investigate the dynamics of isothermal phase inhomogeneities, study the thermovibrational instabilities with Soret effect; and establish a mathematical model of the boiling phenomena under microgravity conditions and finally to check the theoretical results by design and construction of several experimental facilities.
