Magnetohydrodynamic flow around bluff bodies

Ziel

The standard fluid dynamics problem of flow around bluff bodies (cylinder, sphere) is considered for an electrically conducting fluid exposed to an external magnetic field. Interest in such a problem arises from the fact compared to the usual Reynolds number a second-order parameter occurs. A variety of flow regimes is possible simply by changing the magnetic field strength. In particular, the magnetic field offers a unique possibility to create a separate action on two- and three-dimensional wake instabilities, which is of crucial importance for basic research on wake dynamics.

There is great interest in materials processing on contactless methods for pre-defined, separate actions on many-component melts. The use of magnetic fields offers such possibilities but requires profound knowledge of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow structures. Electromagnetic processing of materials has been given the highest priority by the Japanese MITI, while activities in Europe are very limited.

The main tasks of the project are: full numerical simulation (up to Re=5000) of the 3d MHD flow around an infinite cylinder with and without external walls; determination of various stability regions depending on the magnetic field direction; numerical simulation of the axisymmetric MHD flow around a liquid drop and stability of the flow depending on the parameters (Re, Ha); and finally, preparation, design and carrying out of correspondence experiments.
