Physical-chemical aspects of thermal spray processes and modelling of protective coating formation

Obiettivo

Thermal spraying technologies cover a wide range of coatings, such as for automotive, aerospace, infrastructure, power generation, petrochemical and biomedical applications. Each coating must be tailored to and optimised for the specific application and the brands of spray gun and material, which demands substantial resources and human effort. In aiming to achieve an essential improvement of thermal spray products a deeper and wider understanding of the existing processes is required. One possible approach is the utilisation of basic scientific results for applied fields of production given by a numerical model. Performance and equipment for thermal spraying is becoming more complex but the basic phenomena, e.g. physical-chemical processes of energy transfer and interaction with the base material, are the same for all thermal spray processes.

The project will promote the operation between several laboratories with the aim to establish mathematical models providing an understanding of thermal spray processes. Materials phenomena will be used for future developments, training purposes, qualification improvements and environmental aspects, reducing experimental effort and saving materials and energy. This simulation and modelling approach is iterative and interdiciplinary, i.e. basic research results and practical know-how have to be considered together, and the model will be validated before the real process can be sufficiently approximated.
