A multimedia pilot centre for electronic commerce based on the Echangeur

Objective

Rationale

Multimedia has a strategic place in the current "electronic commerce" revolution of the retail sector. The COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS project aims to facilitate uptake of multimedia in the retail industry by:
- developing a range of innovative support services dedicated to the players involved in multimedia in the retail industry;
- setting up the appropriate mechanisms for enabling a Europe wide service delivery;
- providing European SMEs with easy access to experience with the Global Information Society and the Global Markeplace for SMEs.

COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS will address all aspects of multimedia applied to commerce and address in particular the new commerce - consumer relations enabled by new technologies and the role of multimedia in the extension of commerce to soft products (new services, games, ...).

Industrial objectives

COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS aims to support the European retail industry by a comprehensive set of services, aimed at stimulating awareness of the applications of multimedia technology in retailing, and in so doing underpin conditions for improved competitieve differentiation of the European retail industry in the global marketplace. Services will include business application intelligence gathering and information dissemination services (seminars, information letters, best practice workshops, guided visits to permanent exhibition), assistance services (strategic brainstorming work groups, set-up of experimental demonstration models), a user club (including special working parties exclusively composed of retailers and technology suppliers).

Delivery mechanisms which will be deployed in order to reach the widest possible range of organisations - both European multinationals and SMEs - include:
- the ECHANGEUR Exhibition Centre (2000 m in Paris, for demonstrations of mobile, home and in-store applications and for workshops and meetings, run by a permanent staff); and
- the Virtual ECHANGEUR, a dedicated distance multimedia system featuring interactive video-conference and working group support as well as a multimedia bulletin-board and WorldWideWeb information.

The services resulting from COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS will be supported and delivered by ECHANGEUR, an extensive multimedia think-tank and pilot demonstration centre, constituted as a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG) and founded by leading .European retail organisations (Galeries Lafayette, El Corte Ingles, Sears) and consumer credit companies (CELETEM, subsidiary of the Compagnie Bancaire, Groupe PARIBAS; COFINOGA subsidiary of the Groupe Galeries Lafayette). The ECHANGEUR will support the evaluation of the strategic choices for the commerce of the future, and will assist the retail industry to imagine, simulate, demonstrate and test advanced information technology and telematic solutions for electronic commerce for large user communities.

A renowned research institute, INRIA, participates in COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS, providing expert support in service innovation, human factors methods, and the Virtual ECHANGEUR. The School of Management, Imperial College, London, is providing analysis and advice to SMEs on the strategic alignment and impact of such technologies on their businesses. The COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS consortium is composed of the ECHANGEUR EEIG founders, and remains open to membership requests from other European retail industry partners.

The ECHANGEUR will operate as from early 1996, with services developed by COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS available by the second half of 1996. The ECHANGEUR aims to become financially self-sustained three years after project start. COMMERCE & INTERACTIONS partners will exploit results through the ECHANGEUR and furthermore will benefit from the know-how and contacts developed through the project.
